"I Didn't Want to Admit It, Worried Fans Would Be Sad"

Group Super Junior member Kim Heechul confessed that he was once diagnosed with a disability grade due to a past traffic accident.
On the 12th episode of SBS’s ‘My Ugly Duckling,’ Kim Heechul was shown visiting a fortune teller for his New Year's horoscope. The shaman told Kim Heechul, “You are living life on a bonus. You had a major crisis in your 20s,” and added, “Be careful in July this year. If you suffer a fracture or something similar, you could become disabled, so you need to be cautious.”
In response, Kim Heechul mentioned his past traffic accident and revealed, “Actually, I’ve never disclosed this anywhere, but I have a disability grade.” Previously, in 2006, Kim Heechul was involved in a traffic accident while returning to Seoul after attending the funeral of fellow group member Donghae’s father. He sustained injuries including a femur fracture and ankle fracture, requiring 12 weeks of treatment. He underwent major surgery to insert seven metal rods and was diagnosed with a level 4 physical disability.

He said, “I didn’t think it was necessary to talk about this, so I didn’t.” He continued, “After being assigned the disability grade, I went to get the sticker that you put on the front of your car. But I decided not to get it, thinking, ‘No, I should live more actively.’ At that time, I didn’t want to admit that my body was in so much pain.” He added, “I didn’t talk about this originally because I was worried the fans would be sad.”
Watching the footage in the studio, Kim Heechul’s mother tearfully said, “He had a lot of schedules back then,” and explained, “He went down separately for Donghae’s father’s funeral and had the accident on his way back alone.” She continued, “He’s better now, but after performing on stage, his leg hurt so much,” and expressed her distress, saying, “The medical staff said he wouldn’t be able to dance, but fortunately, he was able to dance after the surgery. However, after performing, he struggled with the pain.” The mother couldn’t stop her tears as she said, “I’m grateful that my son worked so hard.”
Kim Heechul debuted in 2005 on KBS 2TV’s 'Sharp 2' and officially debuted in the music industry as a member of Super Junior in November of the same year. With his outstanding looks, he attracted much attention from the start and rose to stardom by releasing numerous hit songs such as ‘U,’ ‘Miracle,’ ‘Sorry Sorry,’ ‘Mr. Simple,’ and ‘Devil.’ In addition, he showcased his exceptional variety show skills on many programs including ‘Rainbow Romance,’ ‘Bad Family,’ and ‘I Love You a Million Times.’ Recently, he has been appearing on shows like ‘Knowing Bros’ and ‘My Ugly Duckling,’ bringing laughter to viewers.
