"Joint Inspections to Be Conducted by the End of This Month"
The government announced that it will transparently disclose the results of the special inspections of navigation safety facilities at airports nationwide and the special safety inspections of the aircraft model involved in the Jeju Air passenger plane accident. A joint inspection targeting airports nationwide and domestic airlines will also be conducted.
Lee Han-kyung, Director of the Disaster Management Headquarters at the Ministry of the Interior and Safety (Second Chief Coordinator of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters), presided over the 17th meeting of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters on the 13th and said, "We will transparently disclose the inspection results so that the public can use aircraft with confidence, prepare improvement measures, and promptly proceed with any actions that can be taken immediately."
Earlier, the government completed inspections of navigation safety facilities at airports nationwide on the 8th, and special safety inspections of six airlines operating the same aircraft model as the accident plane, the Boeing 737-800, were completed on the 10th. Additionally, to alleviate public concerns about air travel, a joint inspection of the overall safety systems of 11 domestic airlines and major facilities such as runways and terminals at 15 airports nationwide is scheduled to be conducted by the end of this month.
It was emphasized that search and cause investigations are also being conducted thoroughly. Director Lee explained, "As requested by the bereaved families last Saturday (the 11th), we are expanding the search area at the accident site." The Accident Investigation Committee plans to move the fuselage of the crashed aircraft to an investigation site for an objective investigation.
The government decided to maintain communication and support for the bereaved families by ensuring that dedicated public officials continue their duties even if personnel changes occur. A comprehensive guidebook containing support details for the bereaved families has been provided, and it will be updated and provided if additional support measures arise. Public donations will be partially disbursed before the Lunar New Year as special consolation money in consultation with the fundraising organizations.
Director Lee stated, "To honor the victims and comfort the bereaved families, related agencies will do their utmost to ensure that the joint memorial service scheduled for the 18th is conducted with proper respect and without neglect."
