From Traffic Control to Apprehension: Assisting Police After the Accident
Blocking the Escape Route with a Motorcycle to Help Arrest the Suspect
The story of a 'motorcycle citizen hero' who helped the police catch a driver who caused an accident while intoxicated and fled the scene has been revealed.
On the 10th, the National Police Agency's YouTube channel uploaded a video titled "There is a secret helper assisting the police." The video captures a traffic accident that occurred late at night past midnight on a road in Incheon. In the beginning of the video, when police officers who responded to the report approach the driver sitting in the driver's seat to understand the accident details, the driver suddenly speeds away.
The police immediately pursued the fleeing vehicle, but it quickly disappeared due to its high speed. Fortunately, the vehicle entered a public parking lot and became trapped. However, the vehicle circled inside the parking lot and suddenly drove in the opposite direction, damaging the barrier. Eventually, the vehicle exited the parking lot and entered an alleyway. Then something surprising happened. The police who found the accident vehicle and entered the alley confronted the vehicle, but it did not reverse and surrendered peacefully.
It turned out that two motorcycles were blocking the road behind the vehicle, preventing the driver from reversing and escaping. These motorcycle riders had been managing traffic at the scene to ensure the safety of other citizens when the accident occurred, and when the vehicle fled, they chased it faster than the police car, frequently updating the police on its location.
The Incheon Police Agency introduced the motorcycle riders as "citizen heroes who were with the police from start to finish." They added, "Thanks to the fantastic teamwork of four people?two police officers and two motorcycle riders?we were able to stop the dangerous late-night chase and arrest the driver who caused the accident while heavily intoxicated and fled the scene." The driver’s blood alcohol concentration was at a level warranting license cancellation, and he was arrested on site. The National Police Agency expressed, "We once again thank the citizen heroes who willingly helped to ensure the safety of other citizens."
Meanwhile, a similar heartwarming story occurred in 2023. At that time, the National Police Agency’s YouTube channel released a video titled "Rider next to patrol car, attention! Actual chase situation," which showed a heavily intoxicated suspected driver fleeing to avoid a breathalyzer test being caught with the help of a citizen on a motorcycle.
At that time, when the police stopped the car and requested the driver to get out and take a breathalyzer test, the driver suddenly sped away. The vehicle fled through the city at speeds exceeding 100 km/h, making it difficult for the police to pursue. Suddenly, a motorcycle joined the chase. Motorcycle rider A overtook the patrol car and positioned the motorcycle on the expected route of the fleeing vehicle. Even after the fleeing vehicle collided with the motorcycle, A continued to follow it and greatly helped in apprehending the driver. Afterwards, A received a commendation from the police.
