Canada Threatened by Trump's 'Tariff Bomb', Considering Retaliatory Tariffs on Oranges and More

Steel, Furniture, Orange Juice, and More Considered for Retaliatory Tariffs

Canada, threatened with a '25% tariff bomb' by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, is reportedly considering retaliatory measures.

On the 10th (local time), CNN reported that Canada is reviewing plans to impose retaliatory tariffs on U.S. imports if the Trump administration actually raises tariffs on Canadian products.

According to sources, Canada is preparing a list of U.S. imports to be targeted with retaliatory tariffs. The list is said to include dozens of items such as steel, furniture, orange juice, whiskey, and animal feed.

The Canadian government's urgent response is largely influenced by recent threats from President-elect Trump. In November last year, Trump stated that drugs and criminals were entering through the Canadian and Mexican borders and warned that if the problem was not resolved, a 25% tariff would be imposed.

Canada's exports to the U.S. in 2023 amounted to 592.7 billion Canadian dollars (approximately 605 trillion Korean won), accounting for more than three-quarters of its total exports. If President-elect Trump's tariff threat materializes, a serious economic impact is expected.

Melanie Joly, Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs, emphasized, "If President-elect Trump imposes tariffs on Canadian products, there will be consequences, and it is necessary to make clear that Canada also has leverage."
