Suspect Claims "Received from Acquaintance"
Bank Teller's Quick Report Leads to Police Investigation
A man in his 50s was caught by a bank teller while attempting to exchange counterfeit 100-dollar bills worth about 10 million won at a bank in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province, a fact that was revealed later.
On the 10th, the Pyeongtaek Police Station in Gyeonggi announced that they had sent Mr. A, in his 50s, to prosecution without detention on December 16 last year on charges of using counterfeit foreign currency.
Mr. A is suspected of attempting to exchange 65 counterfeit 100-dollar bills (worth about 10 million won) at a bank in Seojeong-dong, Pyeongtaek City, around 5 p.m. on October 25 last year.
At that time, bank teller Mr. B, immediately after receiving the counterfeit bills from Mr. A, found the appearance of the bills suspicious and reported it to the police.
During the police investigation, Mr. A claimed that "I lent money to an acquaintance, Mr. C, in the past and was repaid with counterfeit bills," and "I kept them for a while and then tried to exchange them."
The police investigation confirmed that Mr. C had already passed away three years ago.
The police secured a statement indicating that Mr. A was aware the bills were counterfeit at the time of attempting the exchange and forwarded the related charges to the prosecution.
Meanwhile, the Pyeongtaek Police Station awarded a letter of appreciation to Mr. B on the 9th for his prompt report that helped the investigation.
