"Emergency Living Allowance Provided
Before Fundraising is Complete"
The government has advised domestic airlines to operate flights primarily with experienced pilots at airports that have installed berm-type localizers, like Muan Airport where the Jeju Air disaster occurred.
Ko Gi-dong, Acting Minister of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, presided over the 15th meeting of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters on the Jeju Air passenger plane accident on the 10th, stating, "The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has urgently implemented safety measures requiring all 11 domestic airlines to operate flights with experienced pilots when flying to airports equipped with berm-type azimuth facilities (localizers), and to conduct special training for each flight operation."
The concrete berm localizer at Muan Airport is cited as one of the causes that exacerbated the damage in this disaster. It should have been installed to break easily even if the plane collided, but instead, the plane was damaged after colliding with the solid berm. Acting Minister Ko added, "We will promptly prepare structural improvement plans."
An emergency living allowance of 3 million won will be provided to the bereaved families of the disaster on this day. Acting Minister Ko said, "Although the public fundraising period has not ended, we are initially providing an emergency living allowance of 3 million won today," adding, "Emergency care is being flexibly applied by expanding the support limits and targets to help according to individual circumstances." He also explained, "Dedicated public officials assigned to each bereaved family are maintained to carefully identify and support their needs."
Regarding personal belongings that were basically stored for six months, the storage period will be extended if requested by the bereaved families.
The flight data recorder (FDR) data extraction has been underway since the previous day in cooperation with the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board, and a thorough investigation into the cause of the accident will be conducted under principles of objectivity, fairness, and transparency.
Acting Minister Ko stated, "To reassure the public, we will derive improvement tasks through special safety inspections of airports and airlines and take immediate action where possible," adding, "We completed special inspections of navigation safety facilities at 13 airports nationwide on the 8th and are currently analyzing the results."
