Gyeonggi Province announced on the 10th that the suburban line will begin service between Daegok Station and Uijeongbu Station from 6 a.m. on the 11th. Opened in 1963, the suburban line was once a major transportation means in the northern Gyeonggi region. However, after the opening of the Seoul Ring Expressway and the metropolitan subway system, ridership declined, leading to the suspension of service in April 2004.

However, as the suspension of the suburban line increased transportation inconvenience for residents in northern Gyeonggi, Gyeonggi Province has been collaborating since 2021 with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Uijeongbu, Yangju, Goyang cities, Korea Railroad Corporation, and the National Railroad Corporation to promote the line's reopening.

The first train from Uijeongbu Station departs at 6 a.m., and the last train leaves at 7:29 p.m. The public transportation travel time from Uijeongbu Station through Jangheung in Yangju to Daegok in Goyang is approximately 50 minutes. Covering a total distance of 30.5 km, the line will initially operate eight round trips per day, with plans to gradually increase service in the future.

The project cost includes 49.7 billion KRW in national funds for facility upgrades, and approximately 5.2 billion KRW in local funds contributed by Gyeonggi Province and the three cities (Goyang, Yangju, Uijeongbu) to support vehicle procurement and the improvement of Cheongwon level crossings. An additional 800 million KRW will be invested for future vehicle safety inspections, and operating costs will be borne by each city based on operational status and revenue.

The suburban line stops at six stations: Daegok Station, Wonreung Station, Ilyeong Station, Jangheung Station, Songchu Station, and Uijeongbu Station. Three Mugunghwa trains operate eight round trips daily. Among these, Songchu Station, Jangheung Station, and Wonreung Station are unmanned stations. The travel time from Uijeongbu Station to Daegok Station is about 50 minutes. Transfers to the GTX-A line and others are available at Daegok Station. This is expected to improve Seoul accessibility for residents of Uijeongbu and Yangju.

Tickets for the suburban line can be booked via the Korail Talk app and Let's Korail website. On-site ticketing is available through automatic ticket machines at Uijeongbu Station, Ilyeong Station, and Daegok Station, while unmanned stations Songchu, Jangheung, and Wonreung issue tickets onboard the train.

The base fare is 2,600 KRW. Until the 31st, a flat fare of 1,000 KRW will be applied for all sections. Starting February 3rd, a 'Suburban Day Pass' will be introduced, allowing unlimited use of the suburban line for one day at 4,000 KRW. The Mugunghwa trains deployed on the suburban line have been refurbished inside and out with a retro concept to evoke nostalgic memories for passengers.

Han Tae-woo, Director of Railway Operations at Gyeonggi Province, stated, “The suburban line is not just a railway but an important axis connecting the future of northern Gyeonggi and the metropolitan area. It will strengthen regional connectivity and contribute to improving residents' quality of life.” He added, “Initially, operations will run eight round trips daily, reflecting past service levels, and after stabilization, service will be gradually expanded.”
