The original musical 'The Man Who Laughs' will open its fourth season on the 9th at the Opera Theater of Seoul Arts Center.
The musical 'The Man Who Laughs' is based on the novel of the same name by the great French writer Victor Hugo. The novel is set in 17th-century England, where social discrimination was severe. The protagonist, Gwynplaine, has a terrifying monster-like face but retains purity. Through Gwynplaine's life, the novel criticizes the social conditions of the time where social justice and humanity had collapsed, deeply highlighting the values of human dignity and equality.
Hugo expressed great satisfaction, saying that after writing The Man Who Laughs, "I have not written a greater work than this."
The musical The Man Who Laughs premiered in 2018 and was subsequently performed in 2020 and 2022.
In addition to Park Eun-tae, Lee Seok-hoon, and Kyuhyun, who appeared in previous performances, Do-young newly joined as Gwynplaine. The female lead, Dea, is played by Lee Soo-bin, who has appeared since the premiere, and Jang Hye-rin newly joins the cast. The charismatic Ursus is portrayed by Seo Beom-seok and Min Young-ki, and the enchanting Josiana is played by Kim So-hyang and Lisa.
The musical The Man Who Laughs has been recognized for its artistic excellence, winning six awards at the 7th Yegreen Musical Awards, three awards at the 3rd Korean Musical Awards, and the Grand Prize and Best Musical at the 14th Golden Ticket Awards. It also signed a licensing contract with Toho Co., Ltd., Japan's top musical production company, and was successfully performed in Japan from 2019 to 2022.
The Man Who Laughs is scheduled to run until March 9.
