Osan City in Gyeonggi Province announced on the 8th that it will provide cremation incentives of up to 350,000 KRW to local residents starting this year. The purpose is to reduce the financial burden on citizens caused by having to use cremation facilities outside the city due to the absence of a crematorium within the jurisdiction.

Due to the burden of remote cremation... Osan City provides 350,000 won cremation incentive payment

Currently, there is no crematorium in Osan City. As a result, citizens have had to use cremation facilities in other areas, paying relatively high cremation fees. Most cremation facilities charge higher rates for residents from other regions.

The support targets are ▲bereaved family members who conducted funerals by cremation for persons who had been registered as residents of Osan City for at least six months as of the date of death ▲bereaved family members who cremated stillborn infants or infants who died without birth registration, where the deceased had been registered as residents of Osan City for at least six months as of the date of death ▲bereaved family members who exhumed and cremated graves located within the city’s jurisdiction.

The support amount is up to 350,000 KRW per case, and some eligible recipients will receive 70% of the actual cremation facility usage costs. To apply for the cremation incentive, applicants must submit related documents such as the cremation certificate and receipts to the administrative welfare center with jurisdiction over the deceased’s registered address.

Osan City has allocated a budget of 394.5 million KRW this year to support the cremation incentive. The city expects that 1,127 citizens will benefit from this incentive.

The city is also considering participating in the comprehensive funeral facility construction project being promoted by Pyeongtaek City to resolve the cremation facility issue. The two cities plan to discuss specific measures through working-level consultations.

Lee Gwon-jae, Mayor of Osan City, said, "We have prepared the cremation incentive to alleviate the economic burden and inconvenience that citizens have experienced due to the lack of cremation facilities in Osan City," and added, "We expect this support to contribute to the improvement of citizen welfare."
