Hong Joon-pyo: "Chaos Continues Due to One Person's Evil Deeds... Like Watching the Movie 'Asura'"

Daegu Mayor Hong Joon-pyo said regarding the impeachment situation of President Yoon Seok-yeol, "It feels like watching the movie Asura."

On the 8th, Mayor Hong said this through his Facebook, stating, "It is a country where a judge can issue an arrest warrant as if making legislation." He pointed out, "A country where the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) without investigative authority can execute invalid warrants, where the National Assembly can illegally impeach the executive branch, where one can freely skip their own trial but order coercive arrests for others' illegal investigations, and where chaos continues due to the evil deeds of one person."

The movie Asura, released in 2016, stars Jung Woo-sung and Hwang Jung-min. It is a crime thriller set in the fictional city of Annam, focusing on the corrupt mayor Park Seong-bae (Hwang Jung-min) who commits various crimes and the detective Han Do-kyung (Jung Woo-sung) who handles his aftermath.

This is not the first time Mayor Hong has mentioned the movie Asura. On September 22, 2021, when he was a presidential candidate for the People Power Party, he criticized then Gyeonggi Province Governor Lee Jae-myung on his Facebook, saying, "He is trying to escape an astronomical corruption case in a very hard-to-understand way," and pointed out, "The construction corruption connection was led by Mayor Lee Jae-myung himself in the Daejang-dong development corruption case." He added, "If you are so confident, why not accept a special prosecutor? Volunteer for a special prosecutor investigation into the Daejang-dong development corruption," and said, "It is truly shameless. It really feels like watching the movie Asura."

Meanwhile, the court extended the validity of the arrest warrant for President Yoon, which was reissued by the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) on charges of rebellion. This follows the expiration of the arrest warrant issued by the Seoul Western District Court on the 31st of last month.

Since difficulties are expected in the arrest process, the validity period was likely extended beyond the usual 7 days. The CIO has stated that while the validity period of warrants is generally 7 days, they are consulting with the police to request a longer period. After extending the arrest warrant, the CIO is expected to coordinate with the National Police Agency’s Criminal Investigation Headquarters and proceed with the execution against President Yoon soon.
