Court Reissues Arrest Warrant for President Yoon... Validity Period Extended

The Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials (CIO) Likely to Attempt Second Enforcement Soon

The court extended the validity period of the arrest warrant for President Yoon Seok-yeol on charges of being the ringleader of a rebellion, which was re-requested by the High-ranking Officials' Crime Investigation Office (Hogeumgongjikja Beomjoe Susa Cheo, Gongsoocheo).

The Joint Investigation Headquarters (Gongjosu Bonbu), consisting of the Gongsoocheo and the National Police Agency's Criminal Investigation Headquarters (Guksubon), announced on the 7th, "The arrest warrant re-requested by the Joint Investigation Headquarters for suspect Yoon Seok-yeol was issued this afternoon." The validity period of the arrest warrant for President Yoon, which the Gongsoocheo obtained from the Seoul Western District Court on the 31st of last month, expired the day before. Since difficulties were expected during the arrest process, it appears that the validity period was extended beyond the previously requested 7 days.

On the 30th of last month, the Gongsoocheo requested an arrest warrant for President Yoon from the Seoul Western District Court on charges of rebellion ringleader and obstruction of the exercise of rights by abuse of authority, and it was issued the next day. On the 3rd, the fourth day after issuance, the Gongsoocheo attempted to execute the warrant with police manpower support but withdrew after a standoff lasting over five hours with the Presidential Security Service.

Subsequently, the Gongsoocheo tried to delegate the execution authority of the warrant to the police without attempting re-execution, but the police rejected it citing legal issues, causing some friction. After extending the arrest warrant, the Gongsoocheo is expected to coordinate with the police's Criminal Investigation Headquarters and soon proceed again with the execution against President Yoon.
