Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province (Governor Kim Jin-tae) announced on the 7th that starting this year, the ‘Visiting Obstetrics and Gynecology Operation Project’ will be conducted in collaboration with Goseong County and Sokcho Medical Center.

The ‘Visiting Obstetrics and Gynecology’ project is a program that provides free medical services for pregnant women through a mobile examination team composed of doctors, nurses, and clinical pathologists, targeting medically underserved areas without obstetrics and gynecology clinics or hospitals.

Gangwon-do to Continue Operating 'Visiting Obstetrics and Gynecology' This Year

Currently, Goseong County is the only city or county in Gangwon Province without an obstetrics and gynecology clinic or hospital. Jeongseon County, which operated this project until last year, will not participate this year due to the establishment of an outpatient obstetrics and gynecology department at Jeongseon County Hospital.

This project has been operated for 14 years from 2011 to 2024, but recently faced the risk of suspension due to difficulties encountered by the entrusted executing agency. In response, Gangwon Province has been striving to maintain and continue this project for pregnant women in medically vulnerable areas within the province.

As a result of actively seeking collaboration with public medical institutions and private hospitals, Sokcho Medical Center was selected as the new executing agency, and a renowned senior doctor was recruited.

With the addition of a distinguished senior obstetrics and gynecology doctor residing in Gangwon Province, a foundation has been established to alleviate the shortage of essential medical personnel in the region and to enable residents in medically underserved areas to receive high-quality medical services.

Dr. Lee Min-jeon, an obstetrics and gynecology specialist in charge of the ‘Visiting Obstetrics and Gynecology’ service, previously served as an outpatient professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Korea University. He is a veteran who has assisted in the birth of more than 20,000 newborns over 30 years and is known as a renowned expert who has practiced medicine in his specialty for a long time.

Jung Young-mi, Director of the Welfare and Health Bureau of Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, said, “The ‘Visiting Obstetrics and Gynecology’ project is an important program that greatly contributes to improving the quality of life by providing medical services to women in medically underserved areas without clinics or hospitals.” She added, “Despite the risk of suspension, Gangwon Province has continuously worked to recruit specialists, provide stable medical services, and build delivery infrastructure.” She further stated, “We will continue efforts to eliminate blind spots in medically underserved areas.”

Residents of Goseong County who wish to receive the ‘Visiting Obstetrics and Gynecology’ service can make a reservation by phone or in person at the Goseong County Health Center and visit on the scheduled consultation day.
