Color serves not only as an aesthetic element in design but also reflects social, cultural, and economic changes and trends. The global color research institute Pantone embodies this meaning by announcing the Color of the Year annually. Beyond a simple color choice, it reflects the flow of society and culture, playing a role in fostering creativity and inspiration across various fields, from fashion and beauty to interior design.
Pantone has selected 'Mocha Mousse' as the Color of the Year for 2025. Mocha Mousse is a subtle brown tone reminiscent of chocolate and coffee, which Pantone describes as providing comfort and solace. It captures the restrained beauty of nature while embodying a wish for harmony through sustainability, balance, and warm inclusiveness.
Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of Pantone, introduced the color by saying, "Mocha Mousse is sophisticated and glamorous while possessing an unpretentious classic quality. It goes beyond the humble and stable image of brown to reveal a new dimension filled with luxury and elegance."
Pantone is a color research institute and color specialist company established in 1963 in New Jersey, USA. It is famous for developing the Pantone Matching System, which assigns unique numbers to each color. The Pantone Matching System is actively used in industries such as printing and graphics, and since 2000, Pantone has selected and announced the 'Color of the Year' annually. The colors they designate influence the entire product design industry, including fashion, beauty, and interior design.
Looking back at previously selected colors, in 2009, when the global economy was hit by the US-originated financial crisis, Pantone chose the bright yellow 'Mimosa' to convey a message of hope. In 2015, amid ongoing economic downturns, they selected the warm and optimistic wine-colored 'Marsala.'
In 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic caused 760 million confirmed cases and 6.9 million deaths worldwide, Pantone chose two colors for the following year’s Color of the Year: 'Illuminating' and 'Ultimate Gray.' They explained that this combination provides positive energy and conveys a message of recovery during difficult times. Last year, Pantone selected 'Peach Fuzz,' carrying the meaning of 'connection, inclusion, and harmony' for modern people living in the digital age, with a hope to enhance mutual acceptance.
