Southeast Regional Radiation Medical Center Achieves Top Grade in Colon, Lung, and Stomach Cancer Appropriateness Evaluation

Expansion of Comprehensive Cancer Care Evaluation, Applying Patient- and Treatment Outcome-Centered Indicators

Exceeding National Average Significantly, Achieving Top Grade and Demonstrating Excellent Medical Quality

Dongnam Regional Radiation Medical Center (Medical Director Lee Chang-hoon) demonstrated excellent medical quality by achieving the highest grade, Grade 1, in the first appropriateness evaluation for △colorectal cancer △gastric cancer △lung cancer conducted by the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service.

In the 2nd cycle appropriateness evaluation, Dongnam Regional Radiation Medical Center earned Grade 1 with scores surpassing the average comprehensive score and category average of Grade 1 medical institutions in all fields of △colorectal cancer △gastric cancer △lung cancer, proving that its entire medical system from diagnosis to surgery is at the national top level.

Notably, the 2nd cycle cancer appropriateness evaluation was more sophisticated than the 1st cycle, expanding the evaluation scope to cover overall cancer treatment, improving the evaluation indicator system from treatment-centered to patient-centered and treatment outcome-centered, and applying common indicators applicable to various cancers.

The evaluation targeted inpatients aged 18 and over who underwent surgery, chemotherapy, or radiotherapy for primary colorectal, gastric, and lung cancers from July 2022 to June 2023. The evaluation covered 165 medical institutions nationwide for colorectal cancer, 146 for gastric cancer, and 106 for lung cancer.

The evaluation items included several common indicators such as △multidisciplinary treatment rate for cancer patients △proportion of patients who underwent surgery within 30 days after cancer diagnosis △ICU admission rate before death of cancer patients, as well as cancer-specific indicators.

Dongnam Regional Radiation Medical Center received particularly high scores in areas such as professional staff composition, surgery rate within 30 days after diagnosis, short hospital stays, and cancer patient education and counseling.

Medical Director Lee Chang-hoon said, “Since last year, the medical center has maintained an emergency medical system and fulfilled its role as a trusted public medical institution for local residents, covering everything from general diseases to severe illnesses. Reflecting this role, last year we recorded the highest number of patients and surgeries since our opening in 2010. This appropriateness evaluation result once again proves that we provide excellent medical services.”

Recently, Dongnam Regional Radiation Medical Center was also selected as a 4th cycle general hospital certified medical institution by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, being recognized as a reliable medical institution for the quality of medical services and patient safety for the fourth consecutive time.
