Why Did Trump’s Eldest Son Visit 'Greenland,' the Place Trump Had His Eyes On?

Donald Trump Jr., the eldest son of President-elect Donald Trump, is visiting Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, to film podcast content. Greenland is the place where President-elect Trump previously openly advocated for its purchase, insisting it should be incorporated into the United States.

On the night of the 6th (local time), President-elect Trump announced on Truth Social, "My son Don (Donald’s nickname) Jr. and several representatives are scheduled to travel there (Greenland) to visit the most wonderful areas and attractions." He added, "The people of Greenland are hearing 'MAGA (Make America Great Again).'"

President-elect Trump particularly emphasized, "Greenland is an amazing place," and reiterated his interest in incorporation by saying, "If it ever becomes part of our country, the people will receive tremendous benefits." He continued, "We will protect and cherish it from the very vicious outside world," adding, "MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN!"

According to the Associated Press citing sources, Donald Trump Jr. will visit Greenland for one day on the 7th to film video content for a podcast. This is a day trip, and the source added that no meetings with government officials or politicians are scheduled. Denmark’s DR Broadcasting quoted M?te Bourup Egede, Greenland’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, saying that there have been no requests from Trump Jr.’s side for meetings with government officials, describing the visit as private. Local Greenlandic media reported that Trump Jr. might meet with Erik Jensen, the leader of the ruling Siumut party and Greenland’s Minister of Finance, but sources denied this.

Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, has a population of about 57,000 and is rich in minerals, oil, and natural gas. It lies between the Atlantic Ocean and the Arctic Ocean and hosts a large U.S. military base. During his first term in office in 2019, President-elect Trump also claimed that the U.S. would purchase Greenland, which sparked strong backlash from Denmark and caused diplomatic tensions. At that time, the planned visit was even canceled due to Denmark’s strong opposition.

Last month, in a statement announcing the nomination of the U.S. ambassador to Denmark, it was mentioned that "For national security and global freedom, the United States absolutely needs ownership and control of Greenland." Shortly after, Greenland’s Prime Minister M?te Bourup Egede strongly opposed this, stating, "Greenland is ours," and "We are not for sale and will never be for sale."

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and a close ally of President-elect Trump, posted on X (formerly Twitter) on the same day, saying, "The people of Greenland should decide their own future," and claimed, "I think they want to become part of the United States."
