Outside X-Games, indoors swimming... Construction of 'Junggye Community Sports Center' in Nowon-gu Nohae Sports Park

Nowon-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced that it is accelerating the expansion of indoor sports facilities by constructing the 'Junggye Community Sports Center' at Nohae Sports Park in Junggye-dong.

The new Junggye Community Sports Center will be located on the site of the currently operating sports center within Nohae Sports Park in Junggye-dong. Since opening in 1998 as the district's first indoor comprehensive sports center, it has been responsible for promoting local sports activities for a long time, but due to aging facilities, it was decided to completely demolish and rebuild. Operations of the existing center ended at the end of last year as part of preliminary work for construction scheduled to begin in the first half of 2025.

The center is planned to open in 2027 and will have a total floor area of 9,023㎡, with one basement floor and three above-ground floors. A new underground parking lot, which was not present in the previous center, will be added, greatly improving the utilization of space on each floor. As a result, while using the same site, the facility’s total floor area will increase dramatically from the previous 5,857㎡.

Main facilities include ▲a swimming pool and a toddler pool ▲a Pilates studio ▲a multipurpose gymnasium ▲a fitness center and program rooms.

In particular, the swimming pool will have six general lanes plus one lane for people with disabilities, and a separate toddler pool will be provided to ensure that all residents can use the facilities without exclusion. After the completion of the new construction, the district plans to offer new programs tailored to the newly equipped facilities and residents’ needs, in addition to the popular indoor sports programs currently in operation, to accommodate a variety of sports activities.

Once the center opens, the Nohae Sports Park area is expected to emerge as a hub for local sports activities. This is because both the outdoor sports facilities, officially opened last November, and the indoor sports facilities of the center will be available within the same park. The currently operating outdoor facilities at Nohae Sports Park include ▲the Northeast region’s first X-Games venue 'Nowon X-TOP' ▲three basketball courts ▲two futsal courts ▲two multipurpose courts for jokgu and badminton.

Meanwhile, in addition to the currently operating Wolgye Community Sports Center and Sanggye Community Sports Center, the district is expanding multipurpose sports centers in each area where comprehensive sports activities can be enjoyed regardless of weather. Construction is underway aiming for this year’s opening of ▲Gongneung-dong Community Sports Center and ▲Seoul Eoullim Sports Center near Suraksan Station, and in the future, a multipurpose indoor sports facility will also be added to the public land of the Gwangwoon University Station area development project in Wolgye-dong.

District Mayor Oh Seung-rok said, “Since we are completely rebuilding the Junggye Community Sports Center, which was the district’s first and symbolic facility, we will do our best to make it a top-class facility,” and added, “We will continue to build infrastructure that allows everyone across regions and generations to enjoy sports activities to support the healthy lives of our residents.”
