The Times of India reported on the 6th that cases testing positive for the acute respiratory infection 'Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV)' have been identified in India.
According to the report, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) announced that two infants at the Baptist Hospital in Bengaluru, Karnataka, southern India, tested positive for HMPV: a 3-month-old girl and an 8-month-old boy.
It is known that the parents of both infants who tested positive for HMPV have no history of overseas travel. The 3-month-old girl has since been discharged, and the 8-month-old boy is recovering, according to the Indian government.
However, Karnataka emphasized that there is no need to have excessive fear of HMPV. The Karnataka Health Minister stated, "HMPV is not a new virus but an existing one, so there is no need to panic." The ICMR also said, "HMPV is similar to other respiratory viruses, generally causing mild cold symptoms and flu-like symptoms in children and the elderly," adding, "It is important to follow basic hygiene guidelines and take general preventive measures."
