Excellent Ratings in ESG Information Verification, Environmental Management System, and Ethical Management... Awarded Grand Prize in Urban Rail Sector
Highly Recognized for Stakeholder Communication Efforts Including First Sustainable Management Report Since Integration
Seoul Metro (President Baek Ho) achieved a great success by being selected as the grand prize winner in the local public enterprise urban railway category at the 2nd 'Korea Public ESG Management Awards' hosted by the Korea Public ESG Institute.
Following last year's award of the Seoul Metropolitan Mayor's Award at the 'Korea ESG Awards' hosted by the Korea Service Industry Promotion Agency for contributing to the win-win development of local communities, Seoul Metro has once again been externally recognized for its efforts in practicing sustainable management.
The 'Korea Public ESG Management Awards' ceremony was held on December 27 last year at Sogang University.
The 'Korea Public ESG Management Awards' are given to public institutions that have created outstanding ESG management performance by evaluating 66 items based on the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy's K-ESG guidelines. Based on last year's performance, evaluations were conducted for public enterprises, quasi-governmental institutions, other public institutions, and local public enterprises, resulting in a total of 21 institutions being selected as excellent organizations.
In this evaluation, Seoul Metro earned high scores in ESG information verification, environmental management promotion system, labor and human rights, and ethical management, becoming the only one among the six urban railway operating organizations nationwide to receive the honor.
In particular, in 2024, by publishing the first integrated sustainable management report since its merger, Seoul Metro was highly recognized for establishing an ESG management system and efforts to communicate with stakeholders.
The company differentiated itself by adding a 'Metronext' section in the sustainable management report, which presents future growth directions such as new technologies, service development, and business expansion based on its core business of urban railway operation.
Additionally, through surveys targeting employees, partners, and local communities, Seoul Metro conducted a double materiality assessment considering the company's financial impact as well as social and environmental impacts on stakeholders, thereby identifying key ESG management issues.
Baek Ho, President of Seoul Metro, stated, “Since the declaration of ESG management in May 2022, we have devoted company-wide efforts to the successful establishment of ESG management through the operation of the ESG Management Committee and ESG management strategy consulting services. In 2024, we left a significant milestone by publishing the first sustainable management report.” He added, “This award marks a new starting point toward the advancement of ESG management, and we will continue to challenge sustainable development by using ESG management as a compass even in the rapidly changing future transportation environment.”
