The government of Virginia, USA, has sent a certificate of appreciation, a letter, and the Virginia state flag to Gwangju City, expressing gratitude for their "shared understanding of mutual exchange and cooperation and the warm welcome extended to the visiting delegation."

Gwangju City announced on the 3rd that it recently received a certificate of appreciation with the handwritten signature of Governor Glenn Youngkin of Virginia, a letter from Joseph Guthrie, Commissioner of the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, and the Virginia state flag.

This gesture was made to express gratitude for the hospitality shown by Gwangju City and Mayor Kang Gijung to Joseph Guthrie, Commissioner of the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS), Robert N Corley III, Dean of the College of Agriculture at Virginia State University, and others, who visited Gwangju on November 18 last year to discuss cooperation in the fields of agriculture and food technology.

In his letter, Commissioner Joseph Guthrie stated, "The meeting was very enjoyable and productive, and I deeply appreciated the display of the American flag during our visit to Gwangju City Hall," and added, "I hope there will be an opportunity for Virginia to reciprocate the hospitality we received in Gwangju."

Notably, the state of Virginia sent the very flag that had been flown at the State Capitol. On the day the Corruption Investigation Office executed the arrest warrant for President Yoon Sukyeol, the city raised the Virginia state flag on the city hall flagpole, symbolically sharing the history of defending freedom with Virginia.

The Virginia state flag depicts a female warrior standing over a defeated king wearing a crown, with the Latin phrase "Sic semper tyrannis" ("Thus always to tyrants") inscribed below. This motto of Virginia was adopted in 1776, the year of the Declaration of Independence.

Mayor Kang Gijung posted a photo of the Virginia state flag being raised on social media, stating, "The state flag and certificate of appreciation sent by the Governor of Virginia have arrived," and added, "The phrase on the flag (Sic semper tyrannis; Thus always to tyrants) is deeply meaningful. The truth that those who abuse power are destined for ruin is universal and timeless."

Meanwhile, Gwangju City and the state of Virginia held a "Meeting for Cooperation in Agriculture and Food Tech" at Gwangju City Hall on November 18 last year. During the meeting, the following topics were discussed: ▲ Establishing a network for technological innovation in agriculture, food, and food tech ▲ Mutual support for imports and exports and exchange of resources and research among universities, research institutes, and companies in both regions ▲ Building a collaborative system for a sustainable agricultural development model.
