Looking for 'Jeong Yonghwan'... The 9th Jeong Yonghwan Cup Youth Soccer Tournament Held

Scholarship Presentation at Gijang World Cup Village on February 25

Recruiting Lower Grade Elementary Teams from Busan, Ulsan, Gyeongnam, and Gyeongbuk Regions

Legendary soccer national team player from the 1980s, the late Jeong Yonghwan, will return to his hometown ground this February.

Although his body is no longer visible, banners bearing his name and photo will smile down at the boys running across the field. The youth soccer dreamers he wished for during his lifetime have grown well and will hold the 9th tournament this year.

This tournament was created by his fan club, which wants to say it all with the slogan "Let's remember Jeong Yonghwan." The 9th Jeong Yonghwan Youth Soccer Tournament and Scholarship Ceremony will be held on February 25 at Gijang World Cup Village.

The fan club that met him while he was alive was reborn as the Jeong Yonghwan Youth Soccer Scholarship Foundation after losing their "star" in 2015. The scholarship members have been working hard to fulfill Jeong Yonghwan’s dream, who transformed from a national team defender to a youth soccer coach.

Song Chunyeol, chairman of the scholarship foundation, introduced, “With sadness melting in our hearts, a few Chinese restaurant owners gathered to create the scholarship foundation, which has grown like a tree to over 100 members.”

He welcomed, “Gijang County, Busan Bank, and the media have also stepped up to support, and the number of sponsoring companies and organizations is increasing, writing the history of Korea’s soccer dreamers that Jeong Yonghwan envisioned.”

The 2025 9th Jeong Yonghwan Youth Soccer Scholarship Tournament is recruiting participating teams under the banner of producing a second Jeong Yonghwan who matches the skill of the player himself. Team registration began on the 2nd and will continue until the 17th.

Teams from Busan, Ulsan, Gyeongnam, and Gyeongbuk regions are awaited in the pure hobby divisions for elementary school grades 1-2 and 3-4. The 1-2 grade division will be played with six players per side, and the 3-4 grade division will be played with eight players per side. There is no participation fee, and lunch will be provided with Jjajangmyeon and fish cake soup. The organizers will select one best player from each division as a scholarship recipient and award the Jeong Yonghwan Prize.
