Paju City, Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Kim Kyung-il) announced on the 3rd that it received the Minister of the Interior and Safety Award in the ‘2024 Bicycle Use Promotion Merit’ hosted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety evaluates the performance of local governments, civic groups, educational institutions, and individuals, awarding outstanding cases that have induced national interest and participation in promoting bicycle use. The evaluation criteria include ▲expansion of bicycle use facilities ▲establishment of bicycle use culture ▲interest of the head of the institution ▲and outstanding cases.
Paju City was recognized for introducing a shared bicycle operation system and establishing a basic plan for bicycle paths centered around rivers, and was selected as the recipient of the ‘Minister’s Award’ in the 2024 Ministry of the Interior and Safety Bicycle Use Promotion Merit. This is the second award following its selection as the ‘Best Institution for Bicycle Use Promotion in Gyeonggi Province.’
Paju City is currently developing the legally mandated ‘Bicycle Use Promotion Plan,’ and based on this, plans to expand bicycle use facilities and create eco-friendly specialized bicycle paths centered around rivers to establish bicycles as a sustainable mode of transportation.
Additionally, in 2025, the city plans to establish a more efficient system to manage abandoned bicycles that spoil the city’s appearance and hinder pedestrian environments.
Mayor Kim Kyung-il of Paju City said, “This Minister’s Award for Bicycle Use Promotion is an achievement created together by citizens and the administration,” and added, “We will continue our efforts to ensure that citizens can use bicycles more safely and conveniently.”
