The New Year Tribute is an event where heads of various institutions and organizations, including the Mayor of Pohang, pay respects to the patriotic martyrs and war heroes at the start of the new year and pledge to carry out proper city administration.
About 200 people attended the tribute, including Mayor Lee Kang-deok, City Council Chairman Kim Il-man, National Assembly member Kim Jeong-jae, city and provincial council members, military unit commanders, heads of veterans’ organizations, and leaders of various institutions and organizations. They honored the noble spirit of sacrifice of the patriotic martyrs and war heroes and reaffirmed their determination and resolve for a new leap forward in 2025.
Mayor Lee Kang-deok stated, “In the new year, we will accelerate the development of future new industries and economic revitalization, and do our best to improve the quality of life for citizens by establishing a dense welfare safety net and creating a pleasant urban environment.” He added, “We will establish the identity of the region and continuously expand cultural and tourism infrastructure to enhance the status of Pohang as a central city of the East Sea.”
The Pohang Memorial Tower enshrines the spirits of 2,908 patriotic martyrs, including Pohang-born national soldiers, independence activists, veterans, and war casualties who sacrificed for the country. It was built in May 1964 and renovated in 2013 to update the aging facilities.
