Ministry of SMEs and Startups Contest Secures Total Project Budget of 1 Billion KRW This Year
Gangbuk-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Lee Soon-hee) announced on the 2nd that Baeknyeon Market and Jangmiwon Alley Market have been selected as Culture and Tourism Markets through the '2025 Traditional Market and Shopping District Revitalization Support Project' organized by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups. Accordingly, the two markets will each receive up to 1 billion KRW in support over the next two years starting this year.
The Culture and Tourism Market Development Project is a merchant-centered initiative that focuses on fostering the unique strengths of markets by linking them with local cultural and tourism resources. Its main components include developing market tour courses, nurturing tourism content, and developing PB products featuring local specialties.
In particular, Baeknyeon Market and Jangmiwon Alley Market have continuously strived to enhance their competitiveness by modernizing facilities such as establishing customer support centers and developing content linked to various local festivals since the 'First Step Foundation Project' in 2022 and 2024, respectively.
The district expects that with two traditional markets in the area being selected simultaneously as Culture and Tourism Markets, this will serve as a new turning point for business innovation in traditional markets and revitalization of the local commercial district.
Going forward, Baeknyeon Market and Jangmiwon Alley Market plan to transform into attractive shopping and cultural spaces by developing various experiential programs and signature products that reflect local characteristics and individuality, diversifying promotional media, and strengthening merchant networks. In addition, Gangbuk-gu continues to promote specialized projects unique to the district targeting traditional markets beyond the two selected Culture and Tourism Markets.
Suyu Traditional Market successfully completed its first year as a digital traditional market last year through establishing delivery infrastructure, supporting online store openings, promotional campaigns, and cooperative establishment. In the second year of the project this year, it will receive comprehensive support to strengthen online competitiveness and accelerate the digital transformation of market management.
Furthermore, Suyu Traditional Market, Suyu Traditional Market, and Solsaem Market, selected for the 'Market Management Package Support Project,' are conducting joint marketing, online marketing, and support for market and delivery manager labor costs with the goal of strengthening the self-sustainability of traditional markets.
District Mayor Lee Soon-hee said, “Taking this opportunity of being selected as Culture and Tourism Markets, we will develop cultural and tourism content reflecting the characteristics of each market and provide generous support from Gangbuk-gu so that local commercial districts can regain vitality even amid economic downturn.”
