Cancellation of Achasan Sunrise Festival, Quiet Atmosphere for Sunrise Viewing
At 7:47 AM, the first sunrise of Eulsan year peeked through clouds on a cloudy day
Hoping the good energy of the blue snake symbolizing wisdom and prosperity will be carried forward
Gwangjin-gu (Mayor Kim Kyung-ho) wished for a happy start to the year on Achasan Mountain on the first day of 2025.
Every year on January 1st, the "Achasan Sunrise Festival" is held on Achasan Mountain. This year, the event was canceled due to the national mourning period designated following the Jeju Air passenger plane accident.
However, safety management measures were maintained as usual to ensure the safety of citizens coming to see the first sunrise of the new year. Efforts were made to maintain order and prevent accidents through ▲operation of a joint comprehensive situation room ▲deployment of safety personnel along hiking trails ▲focused management of main hiking routes ▲entry and traffic control ▲emergency action guidelines.
From early dawn, Achasan was bustling with citizens who came to see the first sunrise of the Eulsa year. Residents moved toward the summit of Achasan through rows of cheongsachorong lanterns, settled on the mountainside, and gathered at the Achasan Sunrise Plaza.
In a calm atmosphere, the new year’s first day was welcomed. As the sunrise time of 7:47 a.m. approached, residents busily moved with eager expressions to see the first sunrise of the new year.
The first sunrise of the Eulsa year was only briefly visible through the clouds. People welcomed the new year in various ways: quietly waiting for the sunrise, making wishes for the new year, shouting excitedly, and trying to capture the first sunrise on camera. Many citizens had to turn back with some regret.
Kim Kyung-ho, Mayor of Gwangjin-gu, said, “First, I express my deepest condolences to the victims of the Jeju Airport passenger plane disaster. I thank the citizens who visited Achasan, where the sun rises first in Seoul, and the related agencies who helped with safety management. I hope the energy of the blue snake, symbolizing wisdom and prosperity, will dwell with all residents, and I wish you health and happiness.”
