Ulsan Office of Education Sets Up Memorial Altar for Passenger Plane Disaster

National Mourning Period Operates Daily Until January 4

Lowered Flags, Memorial Banners, and Staff Mourning Ribbons Observed

On the 31st, the Ulsan Metropolitan Office of Education set up a memorial altar on the first floor of the Education Office's Chaekmaru to honor the victims of the passenger plane disaster.

That morning, Superintendent Cheon Chang-su, along with senior officials, visited the memorial altar to pay respects to the victims. Joint memorial altars have been established at the accident site, the airport, and in 17 cities and provinces nationwide. The Ulsan Office of Education installed the altar at the main office so that students, parents, faculty, and citizens can express their condolences.

The memorial altar will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. until January 4, the national mourning period, allowing anyone to freely visit and honor the victims.

Earlier, the Ulsan Office of Education lowered flags to half-mast and distributed mourning ribbons to staff to encourage participation in the mourning. A memorial banner was installed at the main office, and memorial notices were posted on the websites of the education office, schools, and institutions.

The opening ceremony scheduled for January 2 will cancel performances and other events and will be conducted appropriately in line with the national disaster situation without deviating from its purpose.

Superintendent Cheon Chang-su said, “I pray for the souls of those who perished in the passenger plane disaster and offer my sincere condolences to the bereaved families. I hope that support for the families will be thorough and that the cause of the disaster will be properly investigated so that such accidents never happen again.”
