The New York stock market will be closed on January 9, next month, a national day of mourning honoring former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on the 29th (local time).
The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) announced on the 30th, "We plan to close on January 9, 2025, in observance of the national day of mourning for former President Carter."
NYSE Group CEO Lynn Martin stated, "The New York Stock Exchange will close on the national day of mourning to honor former President Carter's lifelong dedication to his country with respect."
Nasdaq also announced plans to close on January 9 to mourn former President Carter.
Major U.S. stock exchanges have a tradition of closing on the day of a president's state funeral as a sign of mourning. They also closed on December 5, 2018, during the funeral of President George H. W. Bush. According to Bloomberg News, this tradition has continued since the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln in April 1865.
Former President Carter passed away at the age of 100 at his home in Plains, Georgia, the day before.
President Joe Biden has designated January 9 next year as a national day of mourning for former President Carter.
