The funeral of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, who passed away at the age of 100 on the 29th (local time), will be held as a state funeral organized by the government.
On the same day, U.S. President Joe Biden issued a statement saying, "I will order a state funeral in Washington DC to honor the great American (former President Carter)."
The Carter Center stated that although specific plans have not yet been finalized, public funeral events are expected to be held in Washington DC and Atlanta, Georgia.
The New York Times (NYT) reported that according to provisional plans established during former President Carter's lifetime, the funeral will last for eight days.
Former President Carter's remains are expected to lie in state at the Georgia State Capitol, followed by 36 hours at the Carter Center, which was his base of operations after leaving office. Afterwards, his remains will be transported to Washington DC, where they will lie in state at the Capitol for 36 hours for visitation and condolences, followed by a state funeral at the Washington National Cathedral.
At this event, President Joe Biden, who was asked by former President Carter during his lifetime, is expected to deliver the eulogy. President Biden revealed last year that former President Carter had requested him to give the funeral eulogy.
Afterwards, former President Carter's remains will be interred in Plains, Georgia. He had expressed a wish during his lifetime to be buried in front of his home in Plains. The Carter Center announced that the burial ceremony will be held privately.
The U.S. state funeral, overseen by the Department of Defense, typically proceeds in three stages over 7 to 10 days: events in the place of residence, events in Washington DC, and the burial ceremony.
