Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter passed away at the age of 100 on the 29th (local time), prompting condolences from leaders around the world.
U.S. President Joe Biden issued a statement saying, "Today, the United States and the world have lost an outstanding leader, politician, and humanitarian."
He continued, "For over 60 years, I have had the honor of calling President Carter a close friend. What made President Carter special was that millions of people in the United States and around the world who never met him considered him a close friend," adding, "He saved, uplifted, and transformed the lives of people worldwide." He also announced, "I will order a state funeral in Washington DC to honor this great American (President Carter)."
President-elect Donald Trump expressed on the social media platform Truth Social, "The challenges President Carter faced came at a critical time for America, and he did his best to improve the lives of all Americans. We all owe him a debt of gratitude," adding, "He was truly a good man and will be greatly missed."
Former U.S. presidents also expressed their condolences. President Barack Obama said, "President Carter taught us all what a life of grace, dignity, justice, and service looks like."
Former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton jointly released a statement saying, "President Carter lived a life of service to others until the very end," and "He tirelessly worked for a better, fairer world."
Former President George W. Bush stated, "President Carter’s work set an inspiring example for Americans across multiple generations."
French President Emmanuel Macron said, "President Carter consistently advocated for the rights of the most vulnerable throughout his life and tirelessly fought for peace," adding, "France extends its sincere condolences to the bereaved family and the American people."
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his condolences on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), saying, "President Carter redefined his post-presidency with an extraordinary commitment to social justice and human rights both at home and abroad."
Brazilian President Luiz In?cio Lula da Silva mentioned on X Carter’s pressure on the Brazilian dictatorship to release political prisoners, his cooperation with Brazil to mediate the Venezuelan conflict, and aid to Haiti, calling him "above all, a person who loved democracy and championed peace."
