The majority of users of Muan International Airport are known to be residents of nearby Gwangju and Jeonnam regions. Currently, Gwangju Airport operates only domestic flights, so Muan Airport is the closest place to use international flights from Gwangju. Yeosu Airport also operates only domestic flights, so Muan Airport is used by residents of the western Jeonnam area including Muan, as well as eastern areas such as Yeosu, Suncheon, and Gwangyang for international flights. Since the 8th, Muan International Airport has started flights not only to Bangkok, Thailand, the route of the accident plane, but also to Nagasaki, Japan, Taipei, Taiwan, and Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia. The number of passengers at Muan Airport has significantly increased this year due to the expansion of Jeju and overseas routes. Last year, the airport had 250,000 passengers, but this year, the number of passengers exceeded 280,000 by October.
