Acting Minister of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, Gogi-dong, issued an urgent directive on the 29th regarding the aircraft runway excursion accident at Muan Airport in Jeollanam-do, stating, "Jeollanam-do, Muan-gun, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the National Fire Agency, the National Police Agency, and other related agencies should mobilize all available equipment and personnel to fully focus on fire suppression and rescue operations."
He also emphasized, "Please pay special attention to ensure that no safety accidents occur among firefighters during the fire suppression process."
The accident occurred at approximately 9:03 a.m. when Jeju Air flight 7C2216 from Bangkok, Thailand, attempted to land on the runway at Muan International Airport and crashed. The aircraft collided with the outer wall of the runway, breaking in half and catching fire.
The aircraft involved was a B737-800, carrying a total of 181 people, including 175 passengers and 6 crew members. As of now, 28 fatalities have been confirmed.
