Pukyong National University Hosts the 15th Pan-Pacific Colloquium

'The Pacific as a Crossroads of Multiple Civilizations' Topic

The Institute of Global Area Studies at Pukyong National University (Director Park Sang-hyun) held the "15th Pan-Pacific Colloquium" on the 26th at the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Business Building Community Hall.

Under the theme "The Pacific as a Crossroads of Multiple Civilizations," the event featured a presentation by Professor Noh Yong-seok (Department of International Area Studies, Pukyong National University) and a discussion led by Professor Cho Se-hyun (Department of History).

In his presentation, Professor Noh criticized, "Our current perception of the Pacific is based on a Western perspective. Originally, different civilizations perceived the Pacific differently." He then genealogically analyzed the initial variations in the process of meaning formation surrounding the Pacific and how certain elements were selected and preserved.

Park Sang-hyun, director of the Institute of Global Area Studies, stated, "This presentation expands Pan-Pacific research, which has so far been focused only on political and economic dimensions, to the level of cultural studies. We will continue to pursue civilization-historical regional research on the Pan-Pacific in the future."

The Institute of Global Area Studies at Pukyong National University was selected for the Humanities and Social Sciences Research Institute Support Project by the National Research Foundation of Korea (2020?2026) and is conducting research titled "Peaceful Co-evolution of Multiple Civilizations in the Pan-Pacific as a Mega-Region: Regional Integration, National Rivalry, and Urban Hospitality."
