Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced the ‘Top 10 Yeongdeungpo News of the Year’ chosen directly by the residents, with the 1st place awarded to ‘Special Science Education District… Focusing on Nurturing Future Science Talent.’

The district conducted a survey on its website from December 3 to 15 to review the achievements of 2024 made together with the residents and to suggest future directions. Voting was held on a total of 20 projects, with over 8,000 residents participating.

The grand winner was ‘Special Science Education District… Focusing on Nurturing Future Science Talent,’ which received 1,725 votes, accounting for 22% of the total votes. ‘Nurturing science talent’ is both Mayor Choi Ho-kwon’s personal philosophy and a key administrative goal of Yeongdeungpo-gu’s 8th elected term. This year, the district took proactive steps in science education investment by providing 20,000 elementary and middle school students nationwide with ‘Science Culture Vouchers’ worth approximately 30,000 KRW each for the first time among local governments.

Additionally, the district launched the ‘Yeongdeungpo-type Scholarship Project,’ offering middle school students opportunities to participate in science camps visiting advanced overseas scientific institutions.

In 2nd place, with 1,659 votes and 21% of the vote share, was ‘Construction of Singil Cultural Sports Library and Yeouido Brighton Library.’ The Singil Cultural Sports Library will be located at 4946 Singil-dong and is scheduled to open in May 2025. Combining a swimming pool, multipurpose gymnasium, and library, the ‘Singil Cultural Sports Library’ is expected to become a new type of cultural and sports complex facility.

Moreover, the ‘Yeouido Brighton Library,’ to be established in the donated space on the basement level 1 of Yeouido Brighton, is set to become a landmark of Yeongdeungpo, transforming into a refined, differentiated, and attractive space for various social groups.

3rd place went to ‘Spring Flower Festival in Spring, Seonyudo Garden Festival in Autumn… First Autumn Festival Held,’ which received 1,480 votes, accounting for 18%. The ‘Seonyudo Garden Festival,’ held for the first time this year to make Yeongdeungpo enjoyable all year round, took place across three stages: Seonyudo Park, Korea’s first environmental regeneration ecological space; the walkable streets around Seonyudo Station; and the Seonyuro Local Market. The festival attracted approximately 75,000 visitors, proving its potential as a sustainable festival.

4th place was awarded to ‘Yeongdeungpo Rotary Overpass Demolition + New Rainwater Pump Station (1+1),’ which overcame the dishonor of being a high-traffic accident area and prevented frequent flooding damage. This project is evaluated as a signal flare announcing the ‘Era of Great Transformation in Yeongdeungpo,’ preparing for the next 100 years.

5th place was ‘The Only District in Seoul to Receive the Minister’s Award in the Local Government Productivity Evaluation’ and ‘Yeongdeungpo Selected as the Most Livable Area in Seoul in One Year.’ Outstanding achievements in population, local economy, administration and finance, education, and culture were recognized externally, proudly proving that Yeongdeungpo is a more livable city compared to other districts.
