Domestic Male and Female Golfers' Handicap Inflation Criticized
The average handicap of amateur male golfers in Korea was found to be 13.5.
The Korea Golf Association (KGA) announced on the 26th the results of a handicap survey conducted among 110,000 users of the KGA certified handicap service who consented to provide their information. According to this data, golfers with handicaps between 10 and 14.9 accounted for the largest group at 32%. Those with handicaps between 15.0 and 19.9 made up 25%, indicating that although they did not reach single-digit handicaps (9 or below), more than 50% of golfers scored in the 80s. Golfers with handicaps between 20 and 24.9, who typically score in the 90s, accounted for 12%.
However, golfers with handicaps of 30 or higher, who find it difficult to score in the 90s, made up only 5%. Advanced players with handicaps between 5 and 9.9 accounted for 20%, and highly skilled players with handicaps between 0 and 4.9 made up 6%. Those holding a plus handicap, meaning they score under par, numbered 1,249, representing just 1%. The average handicap for female amateur golfers was recorded at 17.1.
The KGA viewed the handicaps of domestic amateur golfers as somewhat inflated. In the United States, where the largest number of amateur golfers enjoy the sport, the average handicap for male amateur golfers is 14.2, and for females, it is 28.7. The KGA pointed out, "This difference arises because most caddies record scores without strictly following the rules, and due to indiscriminate penalty area settings, incorrect operations, OB tees, and golf course setups that violate regulations."
