Currently, Pokhara City in Nepal is implementing the ‘Green Job Creation Project through the Establishment of a Recycle/Upcycle Platform and Eco-friendly Pilot Village’ with support from the UNDP (a subsidiary organization of the UN General Assembly) Nepal office and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA). This project, which began last year, is a long-term initiative spanning six years, aiming to create 1,000 green jobs through improving waste management policies, establishing companies via recycling/upcycling education and awareness enhancement, and providing technical equipment support.
In September, Yangpyeong-gun received the grand prize at the ‘Clean Gyeonggi Campaign’ themed ‘Reduction of Household Waste and Resource Circulation,’ recognizing the excellence of its resource circulation policies. Based on these achievements, Yangpyeong-gun has been spotlighted as an advanced case of waste management and circular economy establishment in Korea, and was selected as a key training destination for high-ranking officials from the central government of Nepal and the Pokhara city government.
During this visit, the Pokhara City delegation examined actual cases of resource circulation policies at Yangpyeong County Office, including ▲disposable cup collection stations ▲tumbler washing machines ▲and the use of reusable cups at the government office caf?, followed by a meeting with Governor Jeon Jin-seon. Afterwards, the delegation visited the Yangpyeong Resource Circulation Center, where the head of the sanitation department explained the main waste policies of Yangpyeong-gun. They toured key facilities such as the household waste transfer station, sanitary landfill, recycling sorting center, and the Styrofoam reduction facility.
As Yangpyeong-gun has been designated as a ‘2025 Environmental Education City,’ it is strengthening waste management policies aimed at carbon neutrality and greenhouse gas reduction to respond to the climate crisis, alongside environmental education for future generations. In particular, the Yangpyeong Resource Circulation Center serves as a hub for educational facilities, operating experiential resource circulation education to expand citizen participation.
Governor Jeon Jin-seon stated, “Pokhara City in Nepal, like Yangpyeong, is a city where urban and rural areas coexist and attracts many tourists. We expect that many of Yangpyeong-gun’s resource circulation policies can be applied to Pokhara City.” He added, “We will continue to foster an autonomous cleaning culture based on resident participation, promote proper recycling and resource circulation to increase recycling rates, and carry out meticulous administration to alleviate inconveniences in citizens’ daily lives.”
Governor Jeon also added, “Through establishing an environmental education culture and realizing carbon neutrality, we will create a clean Yangpyeong where everyone can live well.”
