8,000 People Participate in Support Petition for Tobacco Company Accountability
The Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam Regional Headquarters of the National Health Insurance Service (Director Choi Deok-geun) conducted a signature campaign together with the Busan Consumer Public Interest Network (President Shin Young-hee) to support the NHIS's appeal victory in the tobacco lawsuit.
From November 6 to December 25, over a period of seven weeks, about 3,000 members of the Busan Consumer Public Interest Network and Busan citizens participated in the signature campaign, strongly urging the tobacco companies to take responsibility for the harms caused by smoking.
Since October, similar signature campaigns have been held in the Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam regions targeting supplier groups, consumer organizations, academia, and the general public, collecting a total of over 8,000 signatures supporting the tobacco lawsuit to date.
Director Choi Deok-geun stated, “We will take the lead in holding tobacco companies accountable for the harms caused by smoking to protect public health and prevent the leakage of health insurance finances due to smoking-related medical expenses.”
