Pocheon City, Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Baek Young-hyun) announced on the 26th that it will officially launch a pilot project for vacant building maintenance starting in 2025 to create a pleasant residential environment and improve the urban environment.

To this end, Pocheon City completed the "Vacant Building Maintenance Pilot Project Plan" in the second half of 2024, and based on this, plans to invest a budget of approximately 60 million KRW to promote the project.

The project involves demolishing vacant buildings other than houses that have been abandoned for more than one year, and utilizing the cleared space as shared areas such as parking spaces or community gardens for local residents.

Buildings selected for the project will be demolished after consultation with the owners, and the cleared spaces will be used for the convenience of local residents for at least three years. Applications can be submitted at the administrative welfare centers of the towns and townships where the vacant buildings are located until January 17, 2025.

Mayor Baek Young-hyun of Pocheon said, "While vacant house maintenance projects are actively underway nationwide, there are no support projects targeting vacant buildings. Based on the results of this pilot project, we plan to secure additional budgets and expand the project according to demand." He added, "We hope this pilot project will improve the city’s aesthetics and create a pleasant urban environment, and we ask for the active participation and cooperation of all citizens for this purpose."
