Support for 22 School Attendances per Month... 50 Students Selected for Pilot Program in First Semester, Expansion Planned for Second Semester
Daejeon City has announced that starting in March next year, it will support middle and high school students in transportation-vulnerable areas with a "1,000 Won School Taxi" service, allowing up to 22 rides per month at a cost of 1,000 won per ride for school commutes.
The "1,000 Won School Taxi" is a program that subsidizes taxi fares for residents in transportation-vulnerable areas where city buses operate infrequently and bus stops are far away, helping them reach convenient transfer points. On the 6th, the city restructured its public taxi program and established a new "School Commute Support" sub-program.
The "School Commute Support" program targets middle and high school students living in 23 districts, including Nangwol-dong and Maeno-dong, who have a commuting vehicle distance of 3 km or more or a straight-line distance to school of 2 km or more. The city will cover the entire taxi fare for up to 22 rides per month, except for the 1,000 won paid by the student.
For the first semester next year, the city plans to select 50 students and operate a pilot program. Applications will be accepted at the local administrative welfare centers from January 6 to February 14 next year, and after the pilot operation, the program will be expanded from the second semester.
Participants for the pilot program will be selected based on a quantitative evaluation of their commuting situation, including the number of transfers, dispatch intervals, and walking distance, with those scoring highest being chosen.
Choi Jongmoon, Director of Transportation for Daejeon City, said, "We hope that the operation of public taxis will guarantee the right to mobility for residents in transportation-vulnerable areas and further improve their quality of life. We plan to provide a more substantial service and expand the program through resident satisfaction surveys and other measures."
