An Indoor Garden with Meeting and Rest Areas Created in the Concourse Plaza between Exits 4 and 5 on Basement Level 1 of Wangsimni Station Line 5, a Busy Subway Station with High Foot Traffic... Featuring Large Flower Beds, Green Pillars, and Various Plants and Gardening Accessories to Improve Indoor Air Quality and Add Vitality to Daily Commutes
Seongdong-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jung Won-oh) has newly created the ‘Wangsimni Underforest Garden’ by utilizing the underground idle space of Wangsimni Station subway.
This year, the district is focusing on creating a '5-Minute Daily Garden City' so that residents can enjoy the pleasure of gardens close to their homes. As part of this, they newly established the ‘Wangsimni Underforest Garden’ inside the subway station, a space closely connected to daily life such as commuting.
The ‘Wangsimni Underforest Garden,’ designed as an indoor garden for meeting and resting, is located in the concourse plaza between exits 4 and 5 on the B1 floor of Wangsimni Station Line 5, which has a large flow of subway users and passersby. Large flower beds were installed and pillars were greened to evoke the image of a small forest. The walls feature a specialized garden with various plants and gardening accessories, improving air quality and serving as a photo zone.
For the convenience of users, the movement path was designed to cross through the garden interior, and an automatic watering system was introduced to maintain beauty and comfort throughout the year.
To commemorate the creation of the ‘Wangsimni Underforest Garden,’ an opening ceremony was held on December 24. About 50 residents attended to celebrate the new specialized garden in Seongdong-gu and shared the joy of green spaces within the city.
Jung Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, “The subway station, which could have felt bleak, has been beautifully transformed through the creation of the ‘Underforest Garden,’ adding leisure and vitality to residents’ daily lives. We will continue to strive to expand spaces that connect people and nature so that residents can richly enjoy the benefits of the ‘5-Minute Daily Garden City’ close to where they live.”
