Seongdong-gu Re-certified as ‘Family-Friendly Certified Organization’ for 6 Consecutive Times... Model of a Happy Workplace

Certified as a 'Family-Friendly Organization' for the first time in 2010 and re-certified six consecutive times, maintaining qualification until November 2027... Highly rated for various employee-tailored family-friendly policies such as last year's introduction of automatic parental leave and mandatory use of spouse childbirth leave

Seongdong-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jeong Won-oh) announced that it has been selected as a ‘2024 Family-Friendly Certified Institution’ by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, achieving re-certification for the sixth consecutive time.

The ‘Family-Friendly Certification’ is a system that grants certification to companies or public institutions that exemplary operate family-friendly systems such as support for childbirth and child-rearing, flexible work systems, and the creation of a family-friendly workplace culture. The certification process includes document and on-site evaluations assessing executive leadership, implementation performance of family-friendly systems, and employee satisfaction with family-friendly management.

Seongdong-gu first received the ‘Family-Friendly Institution’ certification in 2010 (2010?2013), followed by an extension of validity (2013?2015) and three re-certifications (2015?2018, 2018?2021, 2021?2024). This year’s fourth re-certification allows the qualification to be maintained until November 2027.

The district received high evaluations for promoting various employee-tailored family-friendly policies such as family care leave, infertility leave, and support for childbirth and child-rearing.

In particular, it gained significant attention last year by introducing an automatic parental leave system. The automatic parental leave system mandates the use of parental leave after maternity leave without a separate application process, helping employees with childcare responsibilities balance both work and family life.

By applying exceptions only when employees, regardless of gender, do not wish to take parental leave, the district fosters a culture of freely using parental leave, encouraging childbirth and activating the parental leave system.

The mandatory use system for spouse’s paternity leave is also in effect. For male public officials, in the case of a spouse’s childbirth, 10 days of leave are granted for single births and 15 days for multiple births, requiring all paternity leave to be used within the designated period. For pregnant and childcare employees, the use of maternity protection time and childcare time is recommended to create a happy workplace for both parents.

Additionally, the second and fourth Fridays of each month are designated as ‘Family Love Days,’ encouraging employees to leave work on time to increase time spent with family, striving to balance work and family life.

Jeong Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, “The re-certification as a family-friendly institution is the result of our best efforts to create a workplace where employees can work with peace of mind, increase work productivity, and build a family-friendly workplace culture where work and family happiness coexist. We will continue to strive to implement policies that create happy families, happy workplaces, and ultimately a happy Seongdong for all residents.”
