It is reported that the tanker was carrying 30,000 liters of kerosene. The fire is said to have started as oil leaked during the process of the tanker hitting the guardrail and overturning.
To prevent casualties, the fire department issued a Level 2 response alert, a warning level, mobilizing 51 to 80 pieces of equipment from 8 to 14 fire stations, including 8 chemical fire trucks, to extinguish the fire. Korea Expressway Corporation sent a disaster alert message stating, "Due to the tanker fire at 288.7 km on the Seohaean Line towards Mokpo, both directions between Seopyeongtaek IC and Seopyeongtaek JCT are closed," and advised, "Please use alternate routes via national roads."
