Man Sentenced to 7 Years for Beating Nonagenarian to Death with Cane

A man in his 60s was sentenced to seven years in prison for assaulting a man in his 90s by snatching a bag of bread and hitting him with a cane, causing serious injuries.

The Busan District Court Criminal Division 5 (Presiding Judge Jang Gi-seok) announced on the 22nd that it handed down this sentence to Mr. A, who was indicted on charges of robbery and injury. According to the facts recognized by the court, on July 28 at around 3:20 p.m., Mr. A approached Mr. B, a man in his 90s, on a road in Dongnae-gu, Busan, snatched a bag containing bread, then hit Mr. B with a cane and pushed him down with both hands when he tried to retrieve it, causing injuries requiring 10 weeks of medical treatment.

The victim, Mr. B, passed away about 10 weeks after the incident.

The court stated, "The defendant committed robbery and injury targeting a vulnerable elderly person in a residential area, and the 93-year-old victim suffered a femur fracture. Considering that the defendant has been punished several times for similar crimes before and that the victim's family has petitioned for severe punishment, a penalty commensurate with the guilt is inevitable."

It added, "The defendant admitted to the crime and deposited 10 million won, and considering that the stolen item was a single bag of bread of small value," explaining the reasons for sentencing.
