Agreement Signed with Ministry of Gender Equality and Family to Reinforce Position as Women-Friendly City for the Next 5 Years
Gwanak-gu (District Mayor Park Jun-hee) was designated as a Women-Friendly City for 2024 and signed an agreement with the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family on the 19th to promote the creation of a Women-Friendly City.
The signing ceremony was attended by 16 local governments designated as Women-Friendly Cities for 2024, including Shin Young-sook, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family.
The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family designates excellent local governments as ‘Women-Friendly Cities’ by comprehensively evaluating 12 indicators across 5 areas, recognizing efforts to promote the rights and improve the quality of life of women and others.
The main evaluation criteria include ▲the proportion of female public officials in managerial positions ▲establishment of gender-sensitive statistics ▲governance operation ▲major projects in the field of women's capacity building.
Since its initial designation in 2019, the district has been designated as a Women-Friendly City for the second time. This is thanks to excellent evaluations for policies related to women such as ▲crime-free safe city projects ▲discovering Gwanak Her Story ▲operating the Women-Friendly City Resident Participation Group.
Accordingly, through the agreement with the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, the district plans to strengthen its position as a Women-Friendly City over five years starting in 2025, based on the theme of ‘Creating a Women-Friendly City Together’ through 26 projects under 5 goals.
As a major project, the district will first form governance and networks to create a Women-Friendly City and build a consensus in the local community on the necessity of women-friendly policies. To expand women's participation in economic activities, it will also operate the ‘Job Incubating Project for Women Victims of Violence’ and the ‘Women’s Job Council.’
To create safe villages for women, the district will support ‘Safety Equipment for Single-Person Households’ and promote ‘Illegal Filming Prevention Projects.’ It will also strive to create a favorable environment for childbirth and child-rearing through the operation of the ‘Gwanak-style Childcare Center I-rang’ and the ‘Care Worker Support Project.’
District Mayor Park Jun-hee said, “As a result of efforts over the past five years to balance work and family and create an environment favorable for childbirth and child-rearing, we have achieved the honor of being designated as a Women-Friendly City for the second consecutive time.” He added, “Through the creation of a Women-Friendly City, we will do our best to make Gwanak-gu a happy place not only for women but also for men and all residents.”
