City Hall Cafeteria Closed and Sangsaeng Card Discount Rate Increased
Relay Campaigns by City, Districts, and Public Institutions Launched
Gwangju City officials are stepping up to revive the local economy, which has been frozen due to the '12.3 Martial Law and Impeachment Crisis.' To help restore livelihoods, they are joining forces through measures such as closing the staff cafeteria, launching relay campaigns to encourage consumption, and spreading a culture of increased spending to overcome the crisis together.
Gwangju City will designate the 24th and 27th as 'Eat at Local Restaurants Days' for all employees. Accordingly, the staff cafeteria will not operate during lunch on those two days.
This initiative aims to ease the burden on local small business owners who are struggling through a difficult winter due to weakened consumer sentiment, and to help restore the local economy. Previously, the city has also suspended dinner service at the staff cafeteria twice a week (Wednesdays and Fridays) to boost the local economy.
The city is also launching a 'Relay Campaign to Promote Consumption for Economic Recovery.' This campaign will be carried out in collaboration with district offices, affiliated and funded organizations, and other major institutions and groups. The first relay campaign will kick off at Songjeong Station on the 24th. Afterwards, the campaign will continue in traditional markets, shopping streets, and neighborhood commercial areas, with participation from five district offices and public institutions. Members of the Gwangju Small Business Association, Merchant Association, and consumer groups will also join the effort.
The city is simultaneously promoting the use of the Gwangju public delivery app and the Sangsaeng Card. To further stimulate local consumption, the city is encouraging the use of small business restaurants for year-end and New Year's gatherings, as well as shopping at traditional markets and purchasing products from local stores.
To support economic recovery, Gwangju City will urgently inject a budget of 10 billion KRW into the five districts and expand the Sangsaeng Card discount rate to 10% for the month of January 2025. The city will also proceed as planned with local festivals and events organized by the municipality, and is running special year-end discount promotions on the Gwangju public delivery app.
Mayor Kang Gijung stated, "Gwangju is a city that has always practiced the spirit of sharing and solidarity in difficult times. As we face a colder winter than ever, I urge the local community to come together to overcome this crisis. Gwangju City will devote itself to nurturing and caring for the livelihoods of our citizens."
