After 14 Years Leading the Federation, Chairman Gu Ja-yeol and LS Group Executive Challenge Cycle Federation Leadership
LS Group's third-generation Lee Sang-hyun, CEO of Ta-in, announced on the 20th that he will run for the 29th president of the Korea Cycling Federation. If elected, it will be the first time in about two years since the retirement of Gu Ja-yeol, chairman of the LS board and president of the federation for 14 years, that an LS Group affiliate executive will lead the federation.
CEO Lee Sang-hyun served as the president of the Korea Hockey Association for four years from 2021 until the 18th of this month. He is credited with revitalizing the hockey sport through efforts such as self-purification in the hockey community, financial stabilization, improvement of international performance, and introduction of youth hockey.
Executives affiliated with LS Group are the first in Korean sports history to serve as heads of sports organizations for three consecutive generations. CEO Lee Sang-hyun’s maternal grandfather, the late Gu Tae-hoe, honorary chairman of LS Cable & System, was a former president of the Korea Weightlifting Federation. CEO Lee’s father, Lee In-jeong, president of the Asian Mountaineering Federation, previously served as president of the Korea Mountaineering Federation.
CEO Lee Sang-hyun has held positions such as a member of the Korea Sports Council’s Inter-Korean Sports Exchange Committee, director of the Korea Sports Council, chairman of the domestic Olympic host city selection committee, and deputy head of the South Korean delegation to the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games and the 2024 Paris Olympics.
In addition to activities related to the Korea Sports Council, he is also active as chairman of the National Choir under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and as a director of the National Theater Promotion Foundation. Ta-in explained that since cooperation between institutions is important, if elected president of the Cycling Federation, he is expected to operate the federation smoothly.
He has also been active in the field of sports ethics. During his tenure as president of the Korea Hockey Association, he planned and executed the "Clean Hockey Campaign." The association received the Korea Sports Council’s top award for sports human rights management. CEO Lee Sang-hyun received the Korea Sports Council Sports Award for excellence in the sports value category.
A Ta-in official said, "CEO Lee Sang-hyun has consistently shown interest in social issues since his time as president of the student council at Hanyang University," adding, "He has obtained qualifications as a social worker and sports ethics instructor and has engaged in various social contribution activities."
