A woman in her 50s who was separated from her family during childhood was dramatically reunited with them after more than 50 years through police genetic analysis.
On the 20th, the Gangnam Police Station in Seoul announced that Ms. A (57), who was left at an acquaintance's house 55 years ago and separated from her family, was able to meet her family with the help of the National Forensic Service and the police.
In 1968, due to financial difficulties, Ms. A was left at an acquaintance's house located in Seongdong-gu, Seoul. At that time, she was 2 years old. Afterwards, Ms. A was raised at a relative's house of the acquaintance, during which her surname was changed and she received a new resident registration number.
In her 50s, Ms. A visited the Gangnam Police Station in Seoul in 2019, expressing her wish to meet the family she had been separated from over 50 years ago. There, she completed genetic registration and a missing person report. In May of the same year, Ms. B (91), Ms. A’s mother, also registered her DNA at the Pohang Nambu Police Station in Gyeongbuk, hoping to find her lost daughter.
In August, the police confirmed through analysis and comparison by the National Forensic Service that the mother and daughter’s genes matched.
With the help of the police, the family was able to reunite and share their stories after 55 years. Ms. A expressed her gratitude, saying, "Thanks to genetics, I miraculously found my mother and family whom I had dreamed of even in my sleep." Ms. B said, "I prayed every day wondering if I would ever see the face of my lost daughter while I was alive, and thanks to this, I was able to find her," adding, "I hope this news brings hope to other families of missing persons."
