Dongdaemun-gu Launches Full-Scale Effort to Prevent Sinkholes... Rapid Restoration of 22 Underground Cavities

Dongdaemun-gu (District Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) announced that it has completed rapid restoration work on a total of 22 cavities discovered through a detailed investigation of underground voids in areas at risk of ground subsidence to prevent sinkholes.

In response to growing public concern due to the recent continuous occurrence of sinkholes, the district has been actively conducting the "Investigation of Cavities in Areas at Risk of Ground Subsidence" since May to prevent safety accidents and create a secure environment for residents.

The investigation targeted 15 major locations including the Cheongnyangni Station area and the underground development section of the Dongbuk Line. Using the latest exploration equipment, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), underground voids were precisely detected. During this process, a vehicle equipped with GPR was used to monitor beneath the roads in real time, and restoration work was promptly carried out as soon as voids were found to prevent damage.

In particular, to minimize the possibility of ground subsidence caused by damage to water and sewage systems, the district is actively promoting the replacement of aging water and sewage pipelines in cooperation with the Eastern Waterworks Office. Additionally, safety management standards for excavation sites have been strengthened to prevent further accidents.

Dongdaemun-gu plans to expand regular inspections of underground facilities and road patrols, continuously monitoring the condition of water and sewage systems around areas where cavities have occurred.

Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, stated, "We prioritize the safety of our residents and will spare no effort in preventing sinkholes and stabilizing the ground," adding, "We will continue to implement proactive measures to create a safe Dongdaemun-gu where residents can live with peace of mind."
