'Analysis Results of 2024 Worker Mobility Characteristics Based on Public-Private Data Pseudonymized Integration'

Office workers spend an average of about 1 hour and 14 minutes daily on the road commuting to and from work.

On the 20th, Statistics Korea announced the results of the "2024 Worker Mobility Characteristics Analysis Based on Pseudonymized Public-Private Data Integration," which includes this information. This survey and analysis were conducted on workers with mobility data (hereafter referred to as commuters) by pseudonymously integrating location and movement information from the three major telecom companies (SKT/KT/LGU+) with population and household data from Statistics Korea.

According to the analysis, as of June 2024, the average commuting time for commuters was 73.9 minutes. The average time taken to commute to work was 36.5 minutes, and the return commute took 37.4 minutes. The commuting time for men was 77.7 minutes, which was 9 minutes longer than that of women (68.8 minutes).

The average arrival time at work for commuting workers was 8:10 AM, and the average departure time was 6:18 PM. Men were found to arrive at work 21 minutes earlier than women. Older age groups tended to arrive earlier and leave earlier.

Commuting workers with preschool children in their households had longer commuting times and travel distances than those without, and those in multi-person households had longer commuting times and distances than those in single-person households.

The average time spent at the workplace was 9.1 hours, with men staying 36 minutes longer than women. Workers in their 30s had the longest stay time at 9.4 hours, and the duration tended to decrease with age.

Based on the residence of commuters, the longest commuting times were in the Seoul metropolitan area. Regionally, the stay time was longest in the Seoul metropolitan area at 9.3 hours and shortest in Jeju at 8.6 hours.
