The city of Gwangju, together with its five autonomous districts, will implement a temporary 10% special discount on the Gwangju Sangsaeng Card throughout January of the new year. This emergency measure, following the year-end special discount promotion on the public delivery app, aims to revitalize the sluggish local economy, which has been significantly dampened due to the 12.3 martial law and impeachment incidents.
On the 18th, the city of Gwangju signed a “Joint Promotion Agreement for the Special Discount on the Gwangju Sangsaeng Card” with the five districts and Gwangju Bank at the city hall business room.
The signing ceremony was attended by Mayor Kang Gijung, Dong District Chief Lim Taek, Seo District Deputy Chief Baek Namin, Nam District Chief Kim Byungnae, Buk District Deputy Chief Kim Jonghwa, Gwangsan District Chief Park Byungkyu, and Gwangju Bank President Ko Byungil.
The city and districts will increase the Gwangju Sangsaeng Card discount rate from the existing 7% to 10% for the month of January, which includes the Lunar New Year holiday. The expected issuance scale of the Gwangju Sangsaeng Card during the special discount period is 100 billion KRW. The support cost for the discount is estimated at 10 billion KRW, which will be shared at a ratio of 60% by the city and 40% by the five districts. The city and districts decided this was most important to revive the local economy and stabilize livelihoods.
Users can receive a 10% special discount subsidy within a combined limit of 500,000 KRW per person for prepaid and check cards from January 1 to 31 next year. Prepaid cards can be purchased or recharged immediately at the discounted amount.
The city will also continue the previous program that fully supports the Gwangju Sangsaeng Card payment commission fee (0.25~0.85%) for affiliated stores with annual sales of 500 million KRW or less.
Lim Taek, Chairman of the District Chiefs’ Council, said, “Gwangju is taking the lead among local governments nationwide in these difficult times for people’s livelihoods. I hope this will provide at least some help in overcoming these challenges.”
Mayor Kang Gijung stated, “Consumer sentiment has become even more frozen due to the martial law and impeachment situation, and the year-end special demand has disappeared, leaving small business owners and self-employed people facing a cold winter. Thanks to the cooperation of the five districts, we were able to increase the Sangsaeng Card discount rate. Although it is a temporary discount, I hope this will revive consumer sentiment and bring vitality to people’s livelihoods.”
Meanwhile, the city of Gwangju is running a year-end special discount promotion on the public delivery app until the 30th. The 2,000~3,000 KRW discount coupons, which were previously issued only on weekends, will now be available on weekdays as well. In particular, during the Christmas period on the 24th and 25th, an additional coupon for up to 4,000 KRW will be provided. The discount coupons can be obtained through the “Wemakeprice O” and “Ttaenggyeoyo” apps, which operate the Gwangju public delivery app.
