According to the Automobile Management Act, owners must undergo a regular (comprehensive) inspection within 31 days before or after the expiration date of the inspection validity period. If a vehicle with an expired inspection is transferred to a new owner, the new owner must also have the vehicle inspected within 31 days from the date of transfer.

If the inspection is delayed even by one day, a fine ranging from a minimum of 40,000 KRW to a maximum of 600,000 KRW will be imposed. Vehicles that have been ordered to undergo inspection but fail to comply for more than one year may be subject to a driving suspension order, so owners should be careful not to miss the inspection period.

Additionally, under the Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance Act, owners must enroll in mandatory automobile insurance and maintain the insurance until the vehicle is officially deregistered in the automobile registration records.

If there is even a single day without insurance coverage, a fine will be imposed, with a maximum fine of 900,000 KRW for private vehicles and 2,300,000 KRW for commercial vehicles. In particular, if uninsured driving is detected, in addition to the fine, the offender may face imprisonment for up to one year or a fine of up to 10 million KRW.

Kim Jong-myeong, Director of the Automobile Management Division, stated, “We will continue to actively promote through various methods to ensure that citizens do not suffer disadvantages due to violations of automobile-related laws.”
