Supporting Public Education with 15.5 Billion Won in Educational Expense Subsidies
Strengthening the Role of Education Support Centers and Significantly Expanding Specialized Education Projects
Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) plans to focus investment on the education sector in 2025 and implement various projects.
Dongdaemun-gu will provide 15.5 billion KRW in educational expense subsidies to kindergartens, elementary, middle, and high schools within the district.
This amount is an increase of 3.5 billion KRW compared to the previous year, aiming to strengthen demand-tailored public education. Previously, the district gathered diverse stakeholder opinions and selected school environment improvement and commuting environment enhancement as key tasks. Based on this, they plan to create a basic educational environment for students and promote qualitative improvement of public education.
Notably, the district plans to identify and focus support on projects requiring priority by school level, such as safety personnel support to ensure safe commuting for elementary students, international exchange support to enhance middle school students’ diverse experiences and global competencies, and dinner operation support for high school students’ self-directed autonomous learning.
In addition, projects targeting overall students, such as literacy education and psychological and emotional support, will be strengthened to increase educational satisfaction.
Furthermore, keeping pace with changing times, the district will actively support innovation in teaching and learning spaces within schools and basic environment improvements to ensure students can study in safe and comfortable environments.
Also, to respond to the changing educational environment such as the full implementation of the high school credit system, the Education Support Center will be expanded and relocated. Through this, students and parents will be assisted in designing optimal career and academic paths. The expanded Education Support Center plans to expand career and college entrance learning programs and offer high-quality educational programs to support students’ competency development.
Online learning support will also be strengthened. Dongdaemun-gu has signed an agreement with Gangnam-gu Office to provide quality educational content to students in the district and plans to partially subsidize the ‘Gangnam Ingang’ internet CSAT (College Scholastic Ability Test) broadcast tuition fees. Students will be able to select lectures they need and supplement public education through customized learning, which is expected to improve academic achievement.
Moreover, by supporting tuition fees for native speaker online English classes, the district plans to provide students with practical English learning opportunities and contribute to improving language skills.
Alongside this, in cooperation with local universities, the district will operate university major experience courses and help students broaden their career choices and prepare for the high school credit system through in-depth classes.
In particular, in collaboration with Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, the district will develop and operate the ‘Dongdaemun-style’ English curriculum, which will reduce the burden of private English education for students and parents approaching the middle school transition and provide programs that boost confidence in English learning.
Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, said, “Through a significant increase in the education budget and infrastructure construction in 2025, we will provide students with diverse learning experiences and opportunities, lead innovation in secondary education, and realize a child-friendly educational city.”
